Scraps : Samson & Delilah by VV Brown

Dearest readers,

After a few months of silence and desperation (holidays), I am finally back on track, über-excited by the upcoming changes (yes, you should stay connected) and pleased to announce that I will from now on be writing from London.

To mark this new beginning, I wanted to share with you the latest musical gem I had the chance to discover live at Rough Trade East a few days ago. There she stood, barefoot on the shop’s small stage, proudly facing the audience clad in a black coat and white pants, her hair untied.

IMG00577-20130920-1855

I bet you already know VV Brown, or at least you must have heard her catchy Shark in the Water track – from her album Travelling Like the Light – that rightfully buzzed in 2009 (god I’m old) – see also Leave.

vv-brown-the-apple

After the aborted Lollipops & Politics project, Vanessa Brown is finally back with Samson & Delilah, a brand new album with which she makes quite a shift, turning to darker tones and brighter synths in a slightly saturated atmosphere – to my utmost delight, of course.

Introduced with the somewhat stripped-down, Oriental(istic) aesthetics of two recently-released intriguing videoclips (Samson, The Apple), Samson & Delilah barely recalls VV’s early works but her vibrant voice carries this musical piece to unexpected heights, adding a somehow richer and more genuine feel to it.

vv-brown-samson-video

Near the end of her acclaimed performance, she declared : « What you hear is really true, truly me. » and this new album does sound like a primal, interior quest to maturity – which she brilliantly achieved.

My personal favorites from Samson & Delilah’s track list: Faith, I Can Give You More, Igneous, The Apple, Ghosts, Warrior

VV Brown will be performing on October 17 at Electrowerkz in London, her performance will be accompanied by a video projection (of her videoclips followed by a twenty-minute-long short film).

Crush : TRUST

Dearest readers,

First, facts : Trust is a Canadian band from Toronto that was until recently formed by Robert Alfons and Maya Postepski – who’s also been playing in the band Austra and recently left the project in Alfons’s sole hands.

Their first album is entitled TRST (funny how removing vowels makes everything look more interesting) and features a lovely analog-like cover picture representing a somehow withered and dazed transvestite in front of a blank background.

The band’s European tour is now over, and I got the opportunity to see them live a week ago – a previous series of mishaps having prevented me to do so in January.

trust-album

Now that I have told you that set of pointless though useful banalities, I may get overly emotional and attempt to describe what it is that makes their music so exceptional.

TRUST

TRST immerses you into the obscurity of moist nightclubs and sleepless nights, bathing your ear in waves of artificial sounds and mesmerizing melodies. At once unsettling and strangely seductive, sultry and whispery, Alfons’s saturated voice sprawls through curls of smoke and neon lights to startle and caress your senses. Carried by exquisite synthetic tunes and trance-inducing beats, TRST’s songs softly wreathe around you, infusing an irrepressible urge to close your eyes and wave along their rhythm. Still, TRST is not all about frenetic dancing and repressed sexual drives, as an unusual poetry quietly oozes from the album’s cryptic words.

IMG_1724

Candy Walls, Shoom, Bulbform, Dressed for Space, Gloryhole & Sulk (listen to this delightful piano version of Sulk) certainly are, in my opinion, the most outstanding songs from the album. As far as I know, there are only two noteworthy remixes of Trust’s songs, one of Candy Walls and the other of Sulk.

If you still haven’t listened to it, you can find the entire album here. You may also discover a few exclusive songs on their myspace page, and I don’t think this song has a title yet.

PS : Did I forget to mention that Robert Alfons is also incredibly handsome ?

He incidentally modeled for an i-D magazine editorial, clad in some J.W. Anderson clothes.

Crush : Easter

4217582111-1

Dear Readers,

Easter is a musical duo from Germany composed of Max Boss & Stine Omar, which gained recognition with their mesmerizing Alien Babies song and music video (nominated for Berlin Music Video Awards 2013). They’ve released to EPs so far : Ur A Great Babe & the Softest Hard. Hypnotic tunes fuse with Stine’s haunting, low voice to distill a delicious casualness sprinkled with hints of sarcasm.

Here‘s their youtube channel, full of playfully conceptual videos, and for those who’d want to see them live in Paris, they’re coming on May 31st. Save the date !

Lastly, Heterosexual is my current favorite – any connection with recent French politics would be, of course, purely incidental.

Scraps : FM Attack

Dear readers,

To celebrate the relatively warmer temperatures we recently got in Paris,

let me introduce you to FM Attack, a project by Canadian musician and producer Shawn Ward

– which, as you should know, I had already mentioned in a previous article.

You may listen to the selection of songs & remixes I lovingly made for you while swooning in the sun

a popsicle in one hand and a martini in the other :

A Million Miles Away

Dreamer

Mixed Signals

Flamingo Drive Feat. Kristine – Strange World (Fm Attack Remix)

Le Prix – Cosmonova (Fm Attack Remix)

Frankfurt Express – Wake Up (Fm Attack Remix)

Before leaving you, I also wanted to share the utmost excitement (in every sense of the word)

I felt at the sight of Trust’s Facebook page : « June 1 – Paris, France – Trou aux Biches« .

(the main guest of the next Cocotte Club at the Machine du Moulin Rouge this summer should be just as fabulous,

but I wouldn’t want to give that away without official confirmation…)

Have a lovely day,

Baisers,

E.

Crush : iamamiwhoami

Iamamiwhoami is the singular project of enigmatic Swedish artist and musician Jonna Lee, who has been secretly weaving her own minimalistic, diaphanous universe bringing together visual arts, music and performance since 2009.

Capture d’écran 2013-04-15 à 17.10.05

Fond of shape-shifting and self-alteration, Lee appears under many guises in the videoclips she releases on her youtube channel to promote each and every song she composes. These clips, usually bathed in pure-white light, are full of an eerie and cryptic imagery that gathers folkloric and natural elements with a typically Nordic minimalist touch (« y« ).

Capture d’écran 2013-04-15 à 17.23.11

Her very first series of videos, a tad more unsettling perhaps, could have hinted at Bart Hess‘s work – this one notably – and perhaps at some of Aphex Twin‘s disturbing videoclips(« u-2 » / « Rubber Johnny« ).

Capture d’écran 2013-04-15 à 17.19.59

Musically speaking, her creations range from experimental & ambient-sounding electronic melodies (« 20101104« ), similar to The Knife’s and Karin Andersson’s Fever Ray, to more pop-like songs (« goods« ), that inevitably reminded me of Goldfrapp – but it may only be her blond hair and eagerness to dance with fluffy monsters (« play » / « A&E« ). Her musical style could also be compared to The Golden Filter’s.

Capture d’écran 2013-04-15 à 17.26.04

« For me that gives me pleasure to display something without explaining and without being too literal with what it is you’re trying to say. »

Capture d’écran 2013-04-15 à 17.20.55

A forty-five-minute-long combination of the videoclips she made for her last album, Kin, can be found here.

ARTE interview (english subtitles available) here

Watch her perform « goods » live here

And, at last, my personal favourite : sever

PLAYLIST

Dear readers,

I suddenly realized I had yet to bore you with my appalling musical tastes, so I thought it was high time I did. I am far from being an expert in music, and I love the weirdest kinds of songs but I noticed I have an uncanny fondness for 80s & 90s sounding music – having said that, I’m also having huge trouble with chronology, so you might disagree. I guess it may have started with the soundtrack of the movie Drive – that now deeply irritates me since everyone’s been playing it over and OVER again for months – or maybe with Glass Candy’s amazing – yes, amazing I said – Warm in the Winter, and it probably culminated with the soundtrack to Laurence Anyways and Trust‘s fabulous first album. Enough said, here’s a little playlist with remarkable bands & songs :

FM Attack – Dreamer

Anoraak – Nightdrive with You (Fear of Tigers remix)

FM Attack – A Million Miles Away

The Sound of Arrows – Lost City

Rain Sword – Heart of Light

College – I Think About It (Keenhouse remix)

Digital Emotion : Go Go Yellow Screen

Vitalic – Fade Away

Electric Youth – Fade Away

Glass Candy – Warm in the Winter

Class Actress – Keep You

Chairlift – I Belong In Your Arms

Vive la Fête – Horror Movies

Ladytron – Seventeen

Thomas Azier – Red Eyes

Connan Mockasin – Forever Dolphin Love (Erol Alkan’s Extended Rework)

Trust – Bulbform

Anne Clark – Our Darkness

And if you ever survived this playlist, let me tell you that this last song still remains the best to my delicate ear :

Kim Carnes – Bette Davis Eyes
